IObit's disk-defragmentation tool has had a makeover and now boasts a new and improved engine designed to ramp up its defragging speed. This makes Smart Defrag - according to iObit - the world's fastest disk-optimisation tool. While we haven't yet benchmark-tested the program, it certainly feels significantly quicker when it comes to analysing large, messy drives and rearranging data. The big new feature in this version of Smart Defrag is a boot-time option that makes defragging begin as soon as your computer starts. This means the program can access files that would normally be locked by the operating system, so it can further improve performance. Smart Defrag can be run on demand at a scheduled time and frequency, or set to defrag your system automatically. Select this last option and the software will monitor your activity and optimise the drive during idle moments. You can tell it how long to wait before starting defragmentation. When you analyse a disk, Smart Defrag will list all the fragmented files and directories by name and tell you how many pieces they are divided into. It will also recommend an action to take. You can choose to defrag only, defrag and fast optimise or defrag and fully optimise. Optimising a drive is definitely worth doing once a month or so, but be warned that even with the new engine, the process will still take quite some time to complete.
